Come vi ho accennato nel mio precedente articolo: Vertical drama: l’ossessione segreta (e perché sono una vera e propria dipendenza), il formato dei vertical drama crea una dipendenza a cui è difficile sottrarsi.

Negli ultimi mesi ho guardato davvero di tutto, navigando tra decine di piattaforme e, lo confesso, ho fatto ben più delle due di notte solo per sapere come finiva quella maledetta serie. 😉

Il fenomeno è in espansione assoluta e lo hanno capito bene ai lati opposti del globo. Tra decine di app, due player stanno emergendo con prepotenza: ReelShort e MyDrama.

 

ReelShort: Tra Gamification e Bestseller

Forte della partnership con Shein (i pacchi del brand cominciano a spuntare in diversi episodi delle varie serie), ReelShort sta alzando l’asticella della sceneggiatura rispetto a inizio 2025.

• Adattamenti di Peso: Dopo Bound by Honor di Cora Reilly (che non consiglio, soprattutto per chi ha amato molto il libro) e Monster in His Eyes di J.M. Darhower (che non ho ancora guardato), hanno colpito nel segno con Vicious di L.J. Shen. Nonostante i tagli necessari per il formato vertical e i rimaneggiamenti della trama il risultato è incomparabile rispetto a quello ottenuto con la Reilly.
• Innovazione: Titoli come il divertente Taming My Bullies o l’interattivo Outplayed (dove in alcuni episodi l’utente paga per decidere la prossima scelta della protagonista) mostrano una maturità narrativa nuova.
• Il lato “Trash”: Restano prodotti che non si prendono sul serio, come CEO’s Baby Daddy is the Merchant of Death (ottimo per farsi due risate). Per i licantropi, però, sospendo il giudizio: quegli effetti speciali con le orecchie stile peluche rovinano inevitabilmente l’atmosfera.

 

MyDrama: L’eccellenza cinematografica

Qui il salto di qualità è netto, grazie anche alla partnership della società madre Holywater (tech-factory che respira AI) con Fox Entertainment.

• Produzioni Premium (Top Tier): titoli come Young Elite o Secret Society: Till Blood Do Us Part mostrano buone prove di recitazione e una sceneggiatura e una regia di livello.
• Sport Romance: hanno centrato l’obiettivo con Love Score e Ice and Flame, portando il genere su un piano molto più professionale e curato.
• Il lato proibito: Mr Denver, Too young to want her professor o Spark me Tenderly esplorano desideri più oscuri e proibiti.

 

La sfida finale: L’equilibrio tra tecnologia ed emozione

La lotta è serrata e gli investimenti sono enormi, ma il vero salto di qualità deve ora passare per tre pilastri fondamentali:

1. Localizzazione e PEMT evoluto: La traduzione automatica (PEMT) è una realtà necessaria per gestire questi volumi, ma non può essere l’ultimo step. Senza un occhio esperto che ne curi le sfumature, si rischia di perdere il ritmo dei dialoghi e quell’angst che tiene incollate le spettatrici. Il segreto è unire la velocità della macchina alla sensibilità umana.
2. Doppiaggio: Serve un investimento su voci professionali che sappiano trasmettere la tensione erotica ed emotiva.
3. Effetti Speciali: Se vogliamo che il Paranormal funzioni, dobbiamo dire addio alla CGI amatoriale e puntare su un’estetica più immersiva.

La tecnologia ci ha portato fin qui, ma è la cura del dettaglio editoriale e produttivo che trasformerà questi micro-drama in una forma d’arte mainstream. E non dimentichiamoci la recitazione: anche quando una storia è magari già vista e rivista, questo dettaglio può fare un’enorme differenza. Ma ne parleremo tra un paio di settimane.

ReelShort vs MyDrama: The Battle for Vertical Supremacy is Won (or Lost) in Quality

As I mentioned in my previous article Vertical drama: the Secret obsession (and why they are a full blown addiction) this format is pure magnetic pull. In recent months, I’ve navigated through dozens of platforms, and I’ll admit: I’ve stayed up way past 2 AM more than once just to see how a series ended. 😉

The phenomenon is exploding globally, and two main contenders are now dominating the scene: ReelShort and MyDrama.

 

ReelShort: Between Gamification and Bestsellers Powered by its partnership with Shein (look out for the brand’s packages popping up in various scenes), ReelShort has significantly raised the bar for screenwriting since early 2025.

• Power Adaptations: After Bound by Honor by Cora Reilly (not my favorite) and Monster in His Eyes by J.M. Darhower, they truly hit the mark with L.J. Shen’s Vicious. Despite the necessary cuts for the vertical format, the result is incomparable to previous attempts.
• Innovation: Titles like the witty Taming My Bullies or the interactive Outplayed—where users pay to decide the protagonist’s next move—show a new level of narrative maturity.
• The “Guilty Pleasure” Side: They still offer “trashier” fun like Ms. CEO’s Baby Daddy is the Merchant of Death. However, for the werewolf genre, I’m still on the fence: those “plush-toy style” ears in the special effects unfortunately ruin the dark romance atmosphere.

MyDrama: Cinematic Excellence The leap in quality here is distinct, thanks to the partnership between parent company Holywater (a tech-factory that breathes AI) and Fox Entertainment.

• Top-Tier Productions: Titles like Young Elite or Secret Society: Till Blood Do Us Part showcase solid acting and high-level direction.
• Sport Romance: They hit the bullseye with Love Score and Ice and Flame, bringing a professional, polished feel to the genre.
• The Forbidden Edge: Mr. Denver and Spark Me Tenderly explore darker desires with a sophisticated touch.

 

The Final Challenge: Balancing Tech and Emotion

The competition is fierce and the investments are massive, but the real leap in quality for the international market must now focus on three fundamental pillars:

1. Smart Localization & PEMT: Machine Translation (PEMT) is essential for scaling, but it’s only the starting point. To truly engage an audience, you need a senior editorial touch to refine the nuances, restore the dialogue’s rhythm, and preserve the angst that AI often flattens. It’s about merging tech-speed with human expertise.
2. Dubbing: Investing in professional voices is crucial to conveying the true emotional and erotic tension of the story.
3. Visual Effects: For the Paranormal genre to truly resonate, we need to move past amateur CGI and focus on high-end visual immersion.

 

Technology brought us here, but it’s the attention to editorial and production detail that will transform these micro-dramas into a mainstream art form. And let’s not forget the acting—even with a familiar trope, a great performance makes all the difference.
