A volte sì. La trama è assurda? In parecchi casi lo è. Eppure…
Eppure, clicchiamo su “Watch More”. E poi scarichiamo l’App.
Niente tempi morti, niente sottotrame complesse.

🇬🇧 ENGLISH VERSION
VERTICAL DRAMA: The Secret Obsession (and why they are a full-blown addiction)
There is a precise moment, usually late at night or during a too-short lunch break, when all (or almost all) of us fall for it.
We scroll through Instagram or TikTok, and an ad appears. Just before walking down the aisle, a woman sees her future husband getting busy with the maid of honor (who is also her best friend); a mafia boss falls in love with the nurse who saved his life and has no qualms about kidnapping her to make her his; a girl of humble origins suddenly discovers she is the sole heir to a multi-billion dollar empire.
It lasts one minute. Is the acting bad? Sometimes, yes. Is the plot absurd? In many cases, it is.
And yet…
And yet, we click on “Watch More”. Then we download the App. Then we pay to unlock episode 45.
Welcome to the world of Vertical Dramas.
What is this phenomenon?
If you don’t know platforms like DramaBox, ReelShort, My Drama or FlexTV yet, you probably have iron willpower.
These are TV series designed exclusively for smartphones: vertical framing, very short episodes (1-2 minutes), and a narrative pace on steroids.
Every episode must end with a cliffhanger strong enough to force you to the next one.
The Kingdom of Tropes (and often Trash too)
As an editor, watching these products is a mix of suffering and fascination.
The scripts seem written by a crazy algorithm mixing the most classic Commercial Romance tropes:
• The Contract Marriage.
• The Secret Billionaire.
• The “Rejected Mate” (the rejected partner in werewolf paranormal romances).
• Cinderella’s Revenge.
It’s all exaggerated, it’s all fast, it’s all incredibly… addictive.
Why do they work? (The Science of Dopamine)
Don’t feel guilty. These formats are engineered to hack our attention.
In a world where we have the attention span of a goldfish, Vertical Drama gives immediate gratification.
No downtime, no complex subplots. Just pure, raw, and sometimes ridiculous emotion shot straight into the brain every 60 seconds.
It’s narrative “fast food”: you know it’s not as nutritious as a Tolstoy novel, but at 2 AM, it’s exactly what you crave.
But there is hope on the horizon…
Until a few months ago, most of these productions suffered from low budgets, not exactly expressive actors, lacking direction, and a chaotic timeline.
However, navigating this vast ocean, the attentive eye starts to notice something.
The market is maturing. Productions are starting to understand that the audience, while loving trash, appreciates quality.
In the last couple of months, I found more than one title that intrigued and surprised me.
And among these, there is a certain King I will tell you about next week.
And now, confess: what is the most absurd Vertical Drama you’ve watched so far?
