La Banks mi ha sorpreso davvero, visto che la conosco per altre atmosfere. So che scrive bene, ma con questa trilogia mi ha molto stupito. Allegra, divertente, con quel tocco di suspense che non guasta, e cosa non meno importante… molto hot! Davvero bella e intrigante, se volete passare delle ore serene, con una buona lettura che vi fa scappare qualche risata sotto i baffi, e a volte anche di cuore. “In bed with the Highlander” è il primo della trilogia, che si intitola “The McCabe Trilogy”, seguito da “Seduction of a Highland Lass” e ultimo “Never Love a Highlander“.

Ewan McCabe looked a lot more threatening now that Crispen was out of his arms and back on the ground. She found herself backing up a step only to collide with the mountain that was Alaric.
Ewan looked first at Alaric, bypassing her as if she were invisible, which was just fine with her.
“You have my thanks for bringing my son home. I had every confidence in you and Caelen.”
Alaric cleared his throat and nudged Mairin forward.
“You have the lass to thank for Crispen’s return. I merely provided the escort.”
Ewan’s eyes narrowed as he studied her further. To her astonishment, his eyes weren’t the dark, fierce orbs she’d thought, but rather they were an odd pale green. When he scowled, though, his face darkened to a thundercloud, and who could possibly think his eyes were anything but a matching black?
Startled by this revelation—and if she were avoiding the inevitable confrontation with the laird, who could blame her?—she turned abruptly and stared up into Alaric’s eyes. He blinked then glared at her like he thought she was daft—and she was pretty sure he did think so.
“Your eyes are green, too,” she muttered.
Alaric’s scowl turned into a look of concern. “Are you sure you didn’t suffer a blow to the head you didn’t tell me about?”
“You will look at me,” Ewan roared.
She jumped and whirled around, taking an instinctive step back and landing once again against Alaric.
He muttered an expletive and hunched over, but she was too worried about Ewan to see what Alaric was cursing over. Her courage had run out, and her determination not to feel pain, not to allow her spine to wither, promptly died a brutal death.
Her legs shook, her hands shook, and pain speared through her sides, making her gasp softly with each breath. Sweat beaded her forehead, but she wouldn’t allow herself to back down any further.
The laird was angry—at her—and for the life of her she couldn’t discern why. Shouldn’t he be grateful to her for saving his son? Not that she’d really done anything heroic, but he didn’t know that. For all he knew, she could have battled ten men on Crispen’s behalf.
It wasn’t until he stared back at her in astonishment that she realized she’d babbled her entire thought process aloud. The entire courtyard had gone silent and looked at her as if she’d pronounced a curse on all of them.
“Alaric?” she murmured, not turning away from the laird’s gaze.
“Aye, lass?”“Will you catch me if I faint? I don’t think a fall to the ground would be good for my injuries.”
To her surprise, he grasped both of her shoulders and held her tightly. His hands trembled the slightest amount, and he made the weirdest sound. Was he laughing at her?
Ewan advanced, his astonishment replaced by that dark scowl again. Did no one in the McCabe clan ever smile?
“Nay, we don’t,” Alaric said in amusement.
She snapped her lips shut, determined she wouldn’t say another word, and prepared herself for the laird’s censure.

Ewan McCabe appariva molto più minaccioso ora che Crispen non era più tra le sue braccia ed era tornato a terra. Si ritrovò a indietreggiare di un passo, solo per sbattere contro la montagna che era Alaric.
Ewan guardò prima Alaric, ignorandola come se fosse invisibile, il che le andava piuttosto bene.

Gli occhi di Ewan si socchiusero, mentre la osservava di nuovo. Con sua grande sorpresa, i suoi occhi non erano le feroci orbite scure che aveva creduto, ma erano piuttosto di uno strano verde chiaro. Quando lui si incupiva, tuttavia, il suo viso si oscurava come una nube minacciosa, e chi poteva assolutamente pensare che i suoi occhi non fossero altro che di un nero identico?

Lei sussultò e si voltò, facendo un istintivo passo indietro e finendo ancora una volta contro Alaric.
Lui borbottò un’imprecazione e si chinò, ma era troppo preoccupata da Ewan per vedere su cosa stesse imprecando Alaric. Il suo coraggio si era esaurito, e la sua determinazione a non sentire dolore, a non permettere alla sua schiena di afflosciarsi, era morta di una fine brutale.
Le tremavano le gambe, le mani, e il dolore le trapassava i fianchi, facendola ansimare sommessamente a ogni respiro. Il sudore le imperlava la fronte, ma non voleva permettere a se stessa di cedere ulteriormente.
Il laird era arrabbiato -con lei- e, per quanto si sforzasse, non riusciva a capire perché. Non dovrebbe esserle grato per aver salvato suo figlio? Non che avesse fatto nulla di eroico, ma lui non ne era a conoscenza. Per quanto ne sapeva, avrebbe potuto combattere contro dieci uomini nell’interesse di Crispen.
Solo quando la fissò di nuovo con grande stupore, si rese conto che aveva farfugliato l’intero processo mentale ad alta voce. L’intera corte si era ammutolita e la guardavano come se avesse formulato una maledizione su tutti loro.
«Alaric?» mormorò lei, senza distogliere lo sguardo da quello del laird.
«Aye, lass?»
«Mi prendereste se svengo? Non credo che una caduta a terra sarebbe utile per le mie ferite.»
Con sua sorpresa, l’afferrò per entrambe le spalle e la tenne stretta. Le sue mani tremarono in modo impercettibile, e fece un suono stranissimo. Stava ridendo di lei?
Ewan avanzò, il suo stupore di nuovo sostituito dal suo scuro cipiglio. Nel clan McCabe non sorrideva mai nessuno?
«Nay, non ridiamo.» disse Alaric divertito.
Lei chiuse la bocca di colpo, decisa a non dire un’altra parola, e si preparò al giudizio del laird.
