A new picture appeared on screen, this time of a beautiful woman in her twenties. Luciana Carreras. Kuznetsov’s niece. His dead brother’s daughter. For some reason, she didn’t have the same last name as her uncle, but had taken her mother’s maiden name instead. Long dark hair, pouty lips, petite and curvy. Leighton recognized the woman from the file Hazel had given him. She was stunning, and he didn’t give a fuck. Because she was related to a monster and okay with running the very business that might sell women into sex slavery.

“A beautiful monster,” he muttered.

Gage turned around in his chair, frowned. “We don’t know that she’s involved yet.” He turned back and started clicking away on his keyboard. “In fact, her financials indicate that she lives a pretty normal life. Well, normal-ish. When her parents died, her uncle was in charge of her trust. He’s used some of it for her schooling, but mainly he’s paid for her college and other expenses directly. Her trust is basically untouched, and she started working for him as soon as she graduated—even though she had a lot of offers on the table. Better offers. If I had to guess, she might’ve taken the job because they’re related. Not that it matters. But from the surface, she looks clean. Her only crime is being related to the man. Most of his businesses are directly on the East Coast, with a few exceptions—the three hotels in New Orleans being some of those exceptions. With what Hazel has told us and the Feds’ presence there now, it’s likely because he’s starting to run shit through the Gulf Coast.”

Leighton grunted once. “She could have taken his job offer because they’re making money off the pain of others.”

Gage lifted one shoulder. “Maybe. If so, we’ll bring her down too. But…just let me keep looking. I’ve found some interesting things about her.”

“Interesting how?” Skye asked, straightening slightly next to Colt. It was a miracle she was sitting still at all. Normally she was pacing.

Gage’s shoulders stiffened ever so slightly, as they always did when someone tried to rush him. He claimed that his genius couldn’t be rushed. “I’ll let you know what I find when I find it. For now, I’ve got everything we need to stealthily infiltrate the hotel and casino.”

“All right. So what else have you got for us?” Skye asked.

“Patience. I’m not your dancing monkey,” Gage muttered, his lips twitching.

“Exactly. Dancing monkeys listen better.”

“I’m pretty sure I picked up a tail on the way back,” Leighton said quietly into his phone. He was in the bathroom of the Presidential Suite with the shower running. He’d done a scan for bugs and other electronics and was certain he wasn’t being listened to, but he was still taking extra precautions. Right now more than ever they had to be careful.

“Did you get a good look?” Colt asked.

“No. Just a feeling I’ve had before. Could be nothing but my instinct tells me otherwise. And I didn’t get that feeling until I got close to the actual casino.”

“Well, you did go out with Kuznetsov’s niece. He or someone who works for him could be keeping an eye on you. But…do you need to pull out?” Colt asked, his tone deadly serious.

“I think if my cover was blown, I’d know.” He’d already thought about it and he wanted to stay put. “I don’t want to pull out yet. I want to scout the casino floor again at least one more night, see what we can pick up on cameras. Gage still hasn’t completely infiltrated their system.” And Leighton didn’t think Kuznetsov would stop running women simply because his niece had stumbled onto a small portion of his operation. No, the asshole would just get smarter about it. Kuznetsov liked money too much.

“All right. We’ve all got your back regardless. And if something happens, I have no doubt you’ll be able to fight your way out.”

Leighton half laughed. “Glad you’ve got so much faith in me.”

“So how was lunch with her? Did you get a better feel for her?”

Leighton wasn’t certain how to answer that. He decided to go with the truth, however. “I really like her.”

Colt was silent for a long moment. “Like her, like her? Or…”

“Like her, like her.”

“You’re serious.” Colt’s tone was neutral.

“Yeah. I kissed her. And I can tell myself that it was all part of the job but I’d be lying. You have a right to know. I’m not going to screw things up but I am seriously attracted to this woman. It took me by surprise. I…didn’t expect any of this. Flat out, I just like her. After hearing the recording today, it seems pretty clear she’s not involved with her uncle’s operation. And she volunteers at a suicide hotline.” He felt like a fool for letting his emotions get entangled but he wasn’t a damn robot, and Lucy Carreras had gotten under his skin.

Colt let out a rough sigh. “This isn’t the end of the world. Maybe it’s a good thing. Because we might need to use her as an asset.”

Leighton’s jaw tightened. He didn’t like the thought of using Lucy at all or even thinking of her as an asset. He understood this op was about more than him and his wants and needs, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. Lucy was more than an asset.

“I need you for a job,” Kyle finally said. He slipped his hands into his pockets, watching her closely.

“I’ve been out of the game a long time.” Well over six years. Ever since she’d found out she was pregnant she’d stopped running high-end heists and left that life behind. No more cons, no stealing, just an honest life with her daughter.

“I know. I wouldn’t be here if I had anyone else. But my guy fell through. I need someone I’ve worked with before—so I know you’re not a narc—and I need someone with your skill set.”

She shook her head. “Kyle, I’ve been removed from that life for so long.”

“Exactly. No one knows you. And I know you keep in shape. And you’ve kept up with climbing…despite your sloppy attire.” His lips curved up slightly, again with the look of disdain.

She bristled at his words, then paused as they set in. How the hell did he know she’d kept up with climbing? He must have been watching her. Olivia wanted to say no again, but knew better. So she crossed her arms over her chest and pretended to feign interest. “What’s the job?” Maybe if she got a better feel for it, she could sabotage it without him knowing.

He shook his head and actually tsked at her. “You know the deal. No details until later.”

She paused, trying to think of a way out of this. “Fine. I’ll think about it.”

He took a menacing step forward, but she made herself stand her ground. She was only a couple feet from the front door. Not that she would run, not with her daughter to protect. But she was also closer to the stairs—which led to her daughter’s room. The most primitive sensation filled her as she faced off with him. If he tried to move past her to the stairs, she would attack. And he’d have to kill her before she let him up there.

“That sounds a lot like a ‘no,’” he murmured, his voice deceptively calm. Nothing about him seemed menacing, but she knew him. Had seen him beat one of his partners within an inch of his life because Kyle thought the guy had stolen from him.

“I said I’d think about it. You just show up out of the blue and demand I work with you again. I have responsibilities now.”

He leaned down, his expression darkening. “Let me make this clear. I’m not asking. I’m telling. I need your skills. And if you go to the cops…” Without turning away from her, he slid his hand into his jacket pocket. Then he placed something in her hand.

Her temper spiked inside her like lightning. Without realizing she’d even moved, Olivia struck out, her palm slamming across his perfectly chiseled cheek. Pain ricocheted through her hand and up her arm even as he lifted his own arm, backhanding her.

With no time to block herself or brace for the attack, she stumbled and slammed into the banister, her eye catching on the newel post. As she hit the bamboo wood floor, Kyle’s boot connected with her ribs once.

Hard.

Sucking in a sharp breath, she couldn’t even cry out as the pain receptors in her side exploded.

The doorbell chimed and Kyle froze above her, looking as if he was ready to murder her.

“If you hurt me, I can’t do the job,” she managed to wheeze out. “Dumbass.” She shouldn’t antagonize him, but seriously, this fool wanted her to do a job with her specific skill set—which included potentially rappelling off buildings. She couldn’t very well do that with broken ribs.

The doorbell chimed again and Kyle stepped back. “I’ll be in touch.” Kyle turned on his heel, heading toward her kitchen.
