Trovare una coinquilina non è mai semplice, e Molly lo sa meglio di tutti. Da quando ha pubblicato l’annuncio diverse ragazze si sono presentate alla sua porta, ma nessuna aveva i requisiti giusti. Molly sta per perdere le speranze, quando all’ultimo appuntamento concordato si presenta… Declan.

Ma a forza di parlare dei propri sentimenti, di fingere di flirtare e, addirittura, di uscire insieme per far ingelosire le loro cotte, Molly e Declan si rendono conto che forse il loro feeling va ben oltre quello che ci si aspetta tra coinquilini…

Una sera, un uomo, tornando a casa in metro, rimase travolto dalla bellezza che una donna irradiava mentre era seduta in compagnia di un libro. La donna leggeva e sorrideva, coinvolta dalla storia, e l’uomo non smise un istante di guardarla. Non ebbe però abbastanza coraggio per rivolgerle la parola e lasciò che svanisse dietro le porte del treno che si richiudevano; tuttavia, il giorno successivo, si ritrovò ad aspettarla allo stesso orario. Attesa vana, la sua, poiché lei non giunse. Poi, una settimana più tardi, a un orario diverso, mentre l’uomo si dirigeva verso la stazione della metro, lungo la strada, scorse nella vetrina di una libreria il romanzo che la donna stava leggendo, la settimana precedente. D’istinto, entrò e lo acquistò, e comprò anche il volume successivo, appena uscito; infine, si diresse a prendere il suo treno. Il caso volle che anche la donna si trovasse lì. L’uomo le si sedette accanto e le regalò il libro fresco di stampa, trovando il coraggio di invitarla a un appuntamento. L’uomo si innamorò subito della donna e la donna fu fortunata a trovarlo sul suo cammino. E vissero per sempre felici e contenti…

Questa potrebbe essere la meravigliosa trama di un romanzo, da leggere senza pensarci due volte, ma non è quella del libro di cui sto facendo la recensione.

Lo so: ora vi sentite prese in giro, tuttavia, a mia discolpa, quella che vi ho appena raccontato è la storia inventata da Declan, il protagonista maschile, per giustificare il come e il quando si è innamorato di Molly. Storia che, vi anticipo, ha uno scopo ben preciso.

Facciamo quindi mille passi indietro.

Siamo a Chicago, Molly Corrigan è un’infermiera e vive in un appartamento con due camere da letto. Vorrebbe poterci abitare da sola, tra M&M’s e silenzio, ma il suo stipendio non glielo permette. Cerca quindi qualcuno con cui dividere le spese. Senza successo, ahimè. Finché alla sua porta non si presenta LUI.

Bello, bello, anzi, bellissimo. C’è solo un problema. È un uomo. E lei è stata chiara nel suo annuncio.

«… A me risulta un appuntamento con D. Tate».

«Sono io. Declan Tate».

«Ma… tu non… non sei una donna».

Declan Tate, pubblicitario, californiano doc, si lascerà intimorire da questo stupidissimo cavillo? Ovvio che no. Il ragazzo è arrivato con un piano ben chiaro e Molly non ha scampo. A suon di cupcake, french toast e altri mille manicaretti li vedremo passare da coinquilini a buoni amici a… ad altro. In fondo si sa, per entrare nel cuore di una donna, si passa dallo stomaco. E Declan non si fa scrupoli a usare questo escamotage per ottenere ciò che vuole. Pensate che il passaggio sarà immediato? No, no, no, sarebbe troppo semplice. La situazione è molto più articolata di così e, oltretutto, la convivenza ha una data di scadenza che man mano diventerà il terzo incomodo della narrazione. Come se in questo romanzo di “terzi incomodi” non ce ne fossero abbastanza… Quanto ci vorrà affinché si giurino amore eterno? Uh, non ne avete idea.

Vi Keeland e Penelope Ward hanno ideato uno slow burn di trecento pagine circa che si divorano in un paio di giorni, ricche di emozioni, di sorrisi e lacrime. Ciò con cui ci andremo a confrontare non sarà sempre facile: la vita, le indecisioni, le paure hanno un peso enorme in questo romanzo, e le autrici si sono coalizzate per farcene provare ogni sfumatura. Ciò che hanno voluto sottolineare in tutto il testo è sicuramente l’importanza degli amici, quanto sia fondamentale avere sempre qualcuno al nostro fianco, quanto faccia star bene sapere di poter contare sull’amicizia e sul suo potere rigenerante, in grado di  illuminare il nostro mondo.

Non mi aspettavo una trama del genere, sono sincera. “Non ti chiedo altro” non è frivolo, ma neanche troppo pesante come lettura. Sicuramente non è il lavoro migliore della coppia di autrici, ma nemmeno il più scontato.

Durante questo viaggio ho pensato spesso a cosa mi stessero trasmettendo i personaggi e l’intreccio, e non posso mentirvi… Ho trovato i personaggi di certo interessanti, coerenti nelle azioni e sentimenti e ho trovato la trama ben strutturata, in un sali e scendi emotivo continuo, senza tempi morti. La lettura riserva momenti spensierati, alternati ad attimi più impegnativi, con l’intento di strappare lacrime a più riprese. E proprio su quest’ultimo punto vorrei soffermarmi. Ho avuto l’impressione che le autrici non volessero spingersi troppo oltre. Ho percepito a più riprese come se fosse presente un freno immaginario nel testo. È come se avessero  voluto creare qualcosa di struggente, sì, senza  però approfondirlo e il risultato, almeno per me, è stato un coinvolgimento che non è mai giunto del tutto. Non sono mai entrata completamente nella storia, né ho mai provato quelle sensazioni che probabilmente  le autrici volevano suscitare.

Nel complesso, questo è un romanzo dolce, con un focus diverso dai consueti testi della coppia di autrici. Ho apprezzato l’aver lasciato in secondo piano la sessualità per dare risalto ad altri aspetti. Vi consiglio questo titolo se cercate un libro senza troppe pretese. E vi consiglio di tenervi a portata di mano qualche dolcetto. Declan vi istigherà a dovere!

«Certo. Quello che vuoi».

«Cosa sta succedendo tra di noi?».

Il duo Ward/Keeland per me è sempre stato una garanzia, un luogo sicuro in cui sostare nei momenti difficili, magari quando la quotidianità è troppo dura e ho bisogno di sorridere e avvertire quelle magiche farfalle che riescono a occupare non solo il tuo stomaco, ma anche la tua mente.

Amo queste due autrici singolarmente e insieme, ho letto ogni loro singolo romanzo: a mio parere sono dotate di una voce meravigliosa che riescono a far vibrare con forza dentro i propri lettori, accedendo all’animo umano con delicatezza e ironia. La loro penna è meravigliosa.

Abbiamo conosciuto queste due autrici come coppia nella serie stand alone composta dai titoli Bastardo fino in fondo, Un perfetto bastardo e Il mio bastardo preferito, per poi approdare a quest’ultimo volume, che però, ahimè, non mi ha provocato le stesse emozioni che erano riusciti a fare i primi tre, come se avessi avvertito alcune mancanze che non sono state in grado di farmelo assaporare fino in fondo.

Ma vediamo insieme il perché.

Bridget Valentine è un’infermiera di trentatré anni, bella ma non appariscente, che ha perso il marito da circa due anni in un incidente e, sebbene non si sia ancora ripresa del tutto, è pronta a voltare pagine per il suo bene e quello di suo figlio, Brendan.

Simon Hogue invece è un medico di ventinove anni, civettuolo, sexy e affascinante, originario dell’Inghilterra (e qui il mio cuore è partito a razzo perché io AMO il fascino inglese, è una mia enorme debolezza), che però, a causa di un evento che non voglio svelarvi, sente il bisogno di andarsene per un po’ dalla sua amata patria e cercare se stesso altrove mentre termina la specializzazione.

Il primo incontro tra i due sarà un momento molto esilarante, che non potrà non farvi arrossire per l’imbarazzo della povera Bridget: quest’ultima infatti va al Pronto Soccorso per togliersi un amo dal fondoschiena e chi si trova davanti? Avete capito, sì, proprio il dottor Simon Hogue!

Se i medici di Grey’s Anatomy vi sono mancati, allora sicuramente Simon saprà consolarvi: alto un metro e novanta, biondo, occhi azzurri, simpatico, divertente, competente e sexy da svenire… Ma sono l’unica che quando va a fare una visita trova solo medici panzuti, calvi e con il fascino dei dromedari? Ma sto divagando.

L’incontro tra i due protagonisti è tipico del duo di scrittrici: imperfettamente perfetto, imbarazzante, ma estremamente divertente.

Dopo questo incontro ognuno va per la sua strada, ma poche settimane dopo Bridget si rende conto che la persona a cui sta per affittare la sua dependance è proprio il medico che ha dovuto togliere un amo dal suo sedere.

Bridget arrossì. Amavo metterla in imbarazzo. Mi sarei divertito a vivere da lei. «Ti sto di nuovo prendendo in giro, tesoro. Rilassati. Adoro vedere le tue guance cambiare colore, quando sei imbarazzata». Le feci l’occhiolino. «E mi piacciono anche le tue chiappe».

L’attrazione tra i due è palpabile sin dal primo sguardo, incendia chiunque osi solo sostare intorno a loro, ma non possono assecondarla: Simon non cerca una relazione a lungo termine e ha quasi finito la sua specializzazione, per cui sta per tornare nel Regno Unito, e Bridget ha un figlio che deve tutelare e di certo non vuole far entrare nella loro vita una persona che inevitabilmente lascerà entrambi.

La loro storia si sviluppa lentamente, per gradi, il che per me non è affatto un punto a sfavore: questo dà il tempo alle emozioni di districarsi con attenzione ed è un elemento che dà una marcia in più ai romanzi, perché li rende molto più verosimili e avvincenti, secondo me.

La situazione tra loro però cambia quando Simon si rende conto che stare lontano da Bridget si rivela terribilmente doloroso e che, forse, deve rivedere tutto ciò che vuole davvero.

Perché solo una scelta gli sembra possibile: lui vuole Bridget.

E Simon ottiene sempre quello che vuole.

Il romanzo ha naturalmente molti elementi positivi: Bridget è un bel personaggio, una donna forte e indipendente, che in seguito alla morte di suo marito non si è lasciata travolgere dagli eventi, ma si è rimboccata le maniche per suo figlio. Durante il suo tempo libero cerca sempre di far vivere al figlio esperienze che non gli facciano avvertire troppo la mancanza della figura paterna, facendo appello a tutta la sua riserva infinita di forza e determinazione.

Questa forza però si affievolisce con la presenza in casa di Simon, così attento e premuroso con il suo bambino da portare inevitabilmente Bridget a innamorarsi di lui, rivelando anche la fragilità di una donna che si è sempre messa al secondo posto per il bene della sua famiglia.

La sensazione di vuoto che sapevo avrei provato fu ancora più forte di quanto avessi immaginato, la paura ancora più violenta.

Desideravo fosse qualcos’altro. Volevo che rimanesse. Volevo che mi amasse.

Simon in qualche modo è un’anima spezzata, che deve fare i conti con una vicenda della sua vita che non ha mai superato e che lo ha portato a essere uno spirito errante, rifiutando ogni forma di legame.

Un altro aspetto che ho apprezzato è stato il colpo di scena che si dispiega verso la fine del romanzo, il quale riesce a strapparti un sonoro: “Cosa?!” durante la lettura.

Però c’è un ma e non mi sento di trascurarlo.

Io ho letto i romanzi delle autrici e so cosa sono in grado di fare. Alcuni dei loro scritti mi hanno fatto piangere a dirotto, mi hanno emozionata, mi hanno fatto ridere fino alle lacrime, mi hanno rapita così tanto da trascorrere notti insonni pur di finirli, per poi rendermi un automa all’università e al lavoro, però con un enorme sorriso stampato sul viso. Questo invece… questo non ha avuto lo stesso effetto.

È un romanzo ben scritto e avvincente, ma… non è alla loro altezza.

I personaggi sono ben fatti, ma… non sono degni di tutti quelli che li hanno preceduti.

Simon, con le sue mille sfaccettature, riesce a catturare il lettore, ma… non riempie completamente la tua testa.

Bridget è una donna forte ma… la loro penna ha dato origine a personaggi indimenticabili e loro non sono tra questi.

I dialoghi sono scorrevoli, dinamici, divertenti, ma… non rapiscono il cuore.

L’epilogo è carino ma… non trasmette alcuna emozione.

Presumo che il punto sia proprio questo: per tutta la lettura, ogni mio pensiero, terminava inevitabilmente con un ma e un’obiezione.

In ogni caso questa, come sempre, è solo la mia opinione e, a prescindere da tutto, è un romanzo piacevole che consiglio a tutte coloro che vogliono prendersi qualche momento di svago e di pace dalla propria vita.

Intanto io aspetto con ansia il loro prossimo romanzo, che sono sicura riscatterà tutte le mie aspettative e sarà in grado di farmi sognare di nuovo.

Ti sei mai reso conto che la parola “mai” ha le stesse lettere di “ami”? È buffo, perché gli ami mi hanno portato a dei “mai”.

I tilted my head. “What would be in it for you?”

His expression turned dark. “People don’t always have to have ulterior motives.”

Suddenly feeling bold, I said, “I thought maybe you would want me to go out with you in exchange.”

Did you hear that? It was a record screeching.

I admit, that was ballsy, but being around him brought out my flirtatious side. Maybe his cologne and cigar smoke were going to my head.

“You’re joking, right?”

Okay. I shouldn’t have asked.

“Actually, I—”

“I’m practically old enough to be your father.”

Really? That’s how he saw me? I knew he was older than me…but he didn’t seem that old. No way. I’d pegged him as early thirties, though I truly had no idea how old he was.

I shook my head. “No, you’re not. That’s a lie. An older brother, maybe. How old are you?”

Instead of answering, he took two steps forward. “Let me make something clear.”

“Okay…”

“I was not insinuating anything by offering to help. And I will not be asking you out, propositioning you, or going anywhere near you, for that matter. We clear on that?”

Okay, then.

I swallowed. Disappointment washed over me as I cleared my throat. “Yes.”

“Good.” He made his way toward the door, turning around one last time. “You’d better go. It was nice chatting. Get me the list tomorrow.”

He disappeared into the house, leaving me on the porch to wallow in his lingering smell and feeling like a complete and utter idiot.
