I’m kind of a lady, but definitely more of a weirdo.

Hearing the woman at the table behind him say that to her friend should’ve turned Logan Gibbs off.

Bello, bellissimo, emozionante e con due protagonisti un bel po’ incasinati, a causa del bagaglio che si portano dietro. Posso dire che la splendida cover mi ha completamente fuorviato: questo non era sicuramente il libro che mi aspettavo di leggere, ma è stato quello di cui avevo bisogno, per riuscire a sciogliere un po’ il gelo che da un po’ di tempo mi sta tenendo in ostaggio, e per questo devo ringraziare soprattutto il piccolo Matias. I protagonisti della storia sono Rome, un ex giocatore professionista di football americano, e Isadora, una giovane donna, che lavora come donna delle pulizie. Insieme a loro in questo romanzo brilla di luce propria il piccolo Matias, figlio di Rome. Matias ha portato un profondo cambiamento nella vita di Rome, gli ha dato modo, attraverso la paternità, di capire quali fossero le cose impostanti nella sua vita, ma il vero punto di svolta è stata poi la malattia incurabile del piccolo, che ha spinto Rome a dedicare tutto il suo tempo, le sue attenzioni al piccolo per stargli vicino. Il loro rapporto è splendido, vederli insieme, vedere quello che deve affrontare Rome da solo ti spezza il cuore, ma allo stesso tempo il personaggio di Matias con la sua dolcezza e serenità, in qualche modo, addolcisce un momento che riesce a coinvolgerti, scatenando mille emozioni. Ad aiutare Rome in questo momento così difficile, non c’è la madre del bambino, ma ha al suo fianco quella che per lui sembra essere una perfetta sconosciuta, Isadora, una donna delle pulizie a cui Matias è molto legato. Izzy è una ragazza che ha avuto diverse disavventure nella sua vita, una famiglia odiosa, un ex marito da dimenticare e tante altre cose che l’hanno resa molto diffidente e distaccata nei suoi rapporti con il genere maschile. Con Rome è tutto diverso, può vedere cosa si nasconde dietro una facciata che rischierebbe altrimenti di intimidirla: è ricco ed è un mastodontico ex giocatore di football, che adesso si è unito a un MC. Isadora invece vede un uomo, che pur spaventato e con il cuore a pezzi, affronta giorno per giorno il suo incubo peggiore e questo le impedisce di poter mantenere qualsiasi barriera intorno al suo cuore. Poi succede il peggio e inizia un nuovo capitolo nella vita di Rome e Isadora. Mi sono piaciuti molto entrambi anche in questa parte del libro. Tutto è stato costruito e pensato in modo da rendere reale e verosimile la loro storia. Come lo dovrete scoprire leggendo il libro, ma l’idea mi è veramente piaciuta molto. I capitoli si susseguono alternando i POV di entrambi, quindi sai sempre perfettamente quello che gli sta passando per la testa, il perché di ciò che fanno, quello che provano. Tra loro non sono tutte rose e fiori. Rome ha i suoi difetti, Isadora pure. Hanno due caratteri forti, le loro reazioni sono influenzate dal loro vissuto e a volte l’istinto di sopravvivenza inganna la mente e il cuore. L’istinto dice a Rome di fuggire, di non rischiare, ma non può fare a meno di sentire il bisogno di proteggere Isadora e di sentire un vuoto incolmabile quando lei non è insieme a lui. Izzy invece capisce che l’unico modo di mostrare il suo amore è quello di dare tempo a Rome di guarire, di fare il suo percorso, sperando che lo conduca da lei. Intorno a loro ci sono i compagni di Rome, i Bear Bottom Guardians MC, sono una presenza discreta, costante, che crea una rete di sicurezza intorno a Rome e Isadora. Il loro MC è differente da altri Moto Club su cui ho letto finora, non sono legati a traffici o affari illegali, anzi sono dei veri e propri guardiani della città, anche se mantengono il loro aspetto un po’ minaccioso. La storia di Rome e Izzy può essere tranquillamente letta come un romanzo autoconclusivo, ma mi è rimasta un po’ di curiosità e voglio scoprire come andrà avanti questa serie, chi saranno i protagonisti del prossimo libro.

I’m not sure how you became my therapist, or how we even got to the point of being pen pals, but I’ll take what I can get.

So, you want to hear about my life? How it’s nowhere near as glamorous as everyone makes it out to be?

Where should I start?

How about the paparazzi. They’re awful. They follow me home. They follow me to work. They follow me to my son’s appointments—though technically, they don’t know he’s my son. Luckily. That was one thing I did manage to do right—keeping him out of the limelight.

Lucky for me, too. Or, at least for him.

And if the paparazzi wasn’t bad enough, my ex was only with me for my money—because she knew that I had it.

If there was one thing I could erase from my life, it would be her.

But, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have my son…and at this point, he’s the single bright light in the sea of darkness that is my life.

Last week she threatened to sue me because I broke the custody agreement we have for our son. Do you want to know what I did? Nothing. Not one damn thing. I stayed at her house while she went away for the day, and I put a drink on her coffee table.

Let me repeat that…I put a drink on her coffee table.

Ok, so it was a Coke can, and I didn’t use a coaster… but I’d finished the damn thing. It was completely empty, it wasn’t sweating, and it didn’t leave any sort of mark.

But, with the way she reacted, you would’ve thought that I’d carved my initials in the table using a screwdriver or something.

Oh, and let’s not forget what my team manager wants me to do.

He wants me to pose naked except for a strategically positioned football for Sports Illustrated.  When did Sports Illustrated stop focusing on sports in favor of selling what’s sexy?

You told me last week that you weren’t sure that you were going to write anymore. I realize that this back and forth we have going on isn’t normal, but if it doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t bother me.

Amazing, sometimes really moving and with two protagonists a little messed up, because of the baggage they carry on their shoulders. I can say for sure the beautiful cover has completely misled me: this wasn’t  definitely the book I expected to read, but it was what I needed, to make me feel good. The protagonists of the story are Rome, a former pro football player and Isadora, a young woman who works as a cleaning lady, but in the novel shines with his own light little Matias, Rom’s son. Matias has brought a profound change in Rome’s life, dealing with all his duties as father, he comes to understand what’s is important in his life, but the real turning point was Matias incurable illness. Rome chooses Matias, giving all his time, his attentions to the child. Their bond is strong and amazing, seeing them together, seeing what Rome has to face alone breaks your heart, but at the same time Matias has in him a sweetness, a serenity that somehow softens everything, triggering a thousand emotions . To help Rome in this difficult time there isn’t the mother of the child, but Isadora, a young woman, a cleaning lady very close to Mathias, seemingly a  perfect stranger to Rome, but a kind one. Izzy is a girl who had several mishaps in her life, a awful family, an ex husband to forget and many other things that have made her very wary and detached in her relationship with men. With Rome everything is different, she can see what is hidden behind his façade, that could be intimidating: he has money and fame, and he joined an MC. Isadora, on the other hand, sees the man who, though frightened and with a broken heart, faces his worst nightmare day by day, and because of that she can’t hide her heart from him. Then the worst happens and a new chapter begins in Rome and Isador’s lives. I loved them both in this part of the book. Everything is built and designed to make their story real and plausible, reading the book, and I really liked it.

The chapters alternate both of their POVs, so you always know perfectly what is going through their minds, their reactions, what they’re feeling. Between them is not always roses and flowers. Rome has his faults, Isadora as well. They’re strong-minded characters, their reactions are influenced by their experiences and sometimes their survival instinct deceives their mind and heart. Instinct tells Rome to run, but he can’t help himself to feel the need to protect Isadora, to feel an emptiness when she is not with him. While she understands too well the only way to show her love is giving Rome time to heal, to find his way. Around them There’re Rome’s  brothers: the Bear Bottom Guardians MC, they are a discreet, constant presence, which creates a safety net around Rome and Isadora. Their MC is different from the Moto Clubs I’ve read so far, they are not tied to trafficking or illegal business, they are more like real guardians of the city, even if they keep their appearance a little scaring. The story of Rome and Izzy can easily be read as a standalone, but I want to read more about the Bear Bottom,  to know how this series will go on.
