“I don’t believe this,” I bitched. “My Valentino boots are actually sticking to the floor. That’s how gross this place is.”

Lizzy just smiled. “Told you to dress casual.”

“I am.”

The smile widened.

“Jeans and a tee is casual.”

“A tee? It’s velvet, Martha.” She held a bottle of beer up to her lips, taking a sip. “I said we were going to a dive bar. You have only yourself to blame for the fashion faux pas.”

“But velvet is in!”

“Would you two quit talking? I’m trying to listen,” said my brother, Ben. The big hairy idiot was slouched back in his chair, bopping his head in time to the music.

Lizzy shuffled closer all conspiratorial-like. “I know why you’re all dressed up.”

I said nothing. There was nothing to be said.

Next her gaze went to the man standing at the end of the bar across from us. No, no, I would not turn my head. I would not fall prey to her bullshit. After all, I’d managed to successfully avoid him for the forty-eight or so hours since my not so triumphant surprise return to the West Coast. Even with us both being in the same house. A very big sprawling house, but still.

On the other hand, it should probably be mentioned that he looked awfully good tonight in jeans and a white T-shirt with a leather jacket. Samuel Rhodes, otherwise known as Sam. Not a pretty man with his harsh features and bull-like neck, but something about him appealed to me. As always, his head was shaved and his body was built and my idiot fingers itched to explore.

Okay. So I guess at some point I must have turned my head. And shit, he caught me looking.

The corner of his lips rose just a little, just enough to mess with me, before he returned to doing his job by casually surveying the packed room. My heart did not speed up due to anything done by him. Clearly, I hadn’t totally caught my breath from when we’d walked in half an hour ago or something. That was all. Interesting to note, he did none of the checking me out typical of a heterosexual male who might have been into me. In fact, he didn’t really give me any signals at all. Ever.

“So you’ve been sitting in the dark, drinking and brooding, huh?” I asked. “That sounds constructive.”

“What did Leona have to say?”

I laughed. “Oh, hell no. I’m not getting caught in the middle of you two again. Why don’t you try settling your issues like normal people and actually talk to one another?”

“You have such a clever mouth, Adele.” He cocked his head. “Always got an answer, don’t you?”

“Enjoy your scotch, Pete.” I turned away. “I’m going to bed.”

“What’s the rush?” Strong fingers wrapped around my arm, not gripping me hard, just enough to hold me in place.

“I’ve spent enough time tonight in the company of a drunken asshole, thank you.” I smiled.

His return smile was lopsided. “You’re angry.”

“I’m tired.”

“You’re angry and tired. Me too,” he said. “Less so on the tired, though. Actually, I’m wide the fuck awake.”

“Good for you.”

He finished off his drink, then reached past me, setting the empty glass on the kitchen counter. “Keep me company.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“Why not?” he asked, expression full of false interest. “Thought you’d love the chance to tell me off some more.”

I looked away. “We’re done here.”

“No, we’re not.”

“Yes, we are.” I pulled my arm out of his grasp. “We’re finished, Pete. Our friendship or whatever the hell it is these days . . . It’s over, kaput, the end. Took me seven years, but tonight I finally wised up.”

“That so?”

“Yep,” I said. “I refuse to keep feeling this way about you. It’s such a stupid waste.”

His gaze narrowed.

“You know, I even have a plan.”

“What might that be?”

“In the morning, I’m going to go home and fuck every available man I meet until one of them does it for me.” My smile felt jagged and horrible. It couldn’t have been pretty so see. “And then I won’t think about you anymore.”

His fingers curled into tight fists. Nice to know I wasn’t the only one affected. I put my hand on his chest, getting up in his face. Two could play the invading-personal-space game, for fun and intimidation. As if I would back down.

Recensione – “Dirty” di Kylie Scott (Dive Bar #1)

L’ultima cosa che Vaughan Hewson si sarebbe aspettato di trovare nella casa in cui ha trascorso l’infanzia è una sposina con il cuore spezzato. Nella sua vasca da bagno, per giunta. Lydia Green ha scoperto che l’amore della sua vita l’ha tradita persino alla vigilia delle nozze. E per giunta con il testimone. Il colpo di grazia, per lei. E così è scappata e si è nascosta in quella casa, troppo sconvolta per pensare a cosa avrebbe fatto nel caso in cui fosse tornato il proprietario. Vaughan è l’esatto opposto dell’uomo perfetto e rispettabile con il quale Lydia stava per sposarsi. È un musicista ma si mantiene con un lavoretto in un bar che gli consente a stento di sbarcare il lunario. Eppure, fidarsi delle apparenze non ha portato Lydia a trovare la felicità… Tutt’altro. Forse, allora, è il caso di cominciare a prendere decisioni col cuore invece che con il cervello. E finalmente, a lasciarsi un po’ andare…

Finalmente è arrivata in Italia la nuova serie di Kylie Scott, la Dive Bar, spin off della Stage Dive, che aveva come protagonisti i componenti della omonima band (e se non l’avete già letta vi consiglio di recuperarla, e in fretta).

Il primo volume, “Dirty”, racconta le vicende amorose di Lydia e Vaughan, quest’ultimo già incontrato nei precedenti libri. Vaughan è un musicista in crisi, la sua carriera ha subito una battuta di arresto in seguito allo scioglimento del gruppo di cui faceva parte, ed egli ritorna al suo paese con l’intenzione di mettere in vendita la casa di famiglia e racimolare così un po’ di soldi utili a ripartire con un nuovo progetto musicale. Nella vasca da bagno di casa sua si è nascosta intanto una giovane Lydia in abito da sposa, in fuga dalle nozze che avrebbe dovuto contrarre con l’uomo che lei reputava perfetto, e che solo quel giorno ha scoperto essere un ipocrita bugiardo, intenzionato a sposarla solo come copertura sociale al suo essere omosessuale e alla sua relazione col testimone di nozze. Fin dal loro primo sguardo, Vaughan e Lydia rimangono colpiti l’uno dall’altro, tanto che Vaughan la invita a rimanere ospite in casa sua fin quando entrambi non dovranno andar via. Alla loro storia si intrecciano quelle dei familiari e amici d’infanzia di Vaughan, a partire da sua sorella Nell, proprietaria del Dive bar.

Il romanzo è narrato in prima persona dal pov di Lydia e gli eventi si svolgono tutti nell’arco di un paio di settimane. Due settimane in cui succederanno tante cose, tanti cambiamenti si avvicenderanno nella testa dei nostri personaggi, nel loro cuore e nella loro vita reale: un percorso auto cognitivo che li porterà a crescere e compiere scelte meno scontate per il loro futuro individuale e come coppia.

La felicità bisogna trovarla dentro di sé. Finalmente l’avevo capito. Potevo trovarmi una casa tutta mia, costruirmi un futuro con le mie mani. Non dovevo per forza fare affidamento su qualcun altro che mi facesse sentire magicamente importante, che mi facesse sentire a casa. Potevo diventare una persona forte, da sola.

Normalmente non amo molto i romanzi in cui sentimenti profondi nascono e crescono così in fretta, ma in questo libro non ho percepito i limiti legati all’instant love, grazie all’ottimo approfondimento psicologico dei personaggi. Il romanzo nel suo complesso è molto piacevole, alternando momenti forti e intensi a livello emotivo a momenti passionali e ad altri di grande ilarità. Ottima anche la traduzione italiana. Chicca imperdibile la presenza in una scena del romanzo di Malcom, il batterista follemente geniale degli Stage Dive, che è il personaggio che più ho amato nella serie precedente.

Lydia Green è combattuta tra il dare fuoco alla chiesa e rintanarsi in un angolino a piangere per sempre. Scoprire che l’amore della sua vita la stava tradendo persino il giorno del suo matrimonio è stato un brutto colpo. Che fosse con il testimone, poi… Il colpo di grazia. E così è scappata e si è nascosta in quella casa, troppo sconvolta per pensare a cosa avrebbe fatto nel caso in cui fosse tornato il proprietario.

“You were going to give it up to Duncan Dickerson?” he sneered. “Are you serious?”

I halted, staring at him. This was not good. “How do you know about that?”

“Anders overheard you and Hang talking.”

“Bastard.”

“Well?” he demanded, acting all authoritarian. Idiot.

“To be fair, I didn’t know his last name was Dickerson,” I said. “That’s unfortunate. Though, I wasn’t actually planning on marrying him, so . . .”

“Not funny.”

I shrugged.

“You barely know the guy.”

“Um, yeah. None of your concern. We’re not talking about this.” How mortifying! My face burned bright. People should just gather around and cook s’mores. “I appreciate that we’re friends. You mean a lot to me. But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.”

“We’re talking about it.” He advanced a step.

“No we are not.” And I retreated.

“You were going to let a complete stranger touch you.” Advance.

Retreat. “People do it all the time. You do it all the time.”

“But you don’t,” he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. “Edie, this is your first time we’re talking about. Isn’t it?”

“Yes, and it’s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.” I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. “You’re not a girl; you wouldn’t understand. Also, last time I checked, you’re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.”

He said nothing.

Deep, calming breaths. “Look, someday I’ll meet someone I really like and we’ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don’t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.”

He slowly shook his head.

“Also, I do not want to die a virgin.”

“What? What the hell are you talking about?”

“Hey, you and I both know death can occur at any time.”

“This is crazy.”

“I’m seeing a therapist!” I told his shoulder. “I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m a little bit messed up these days. It’s hard for me to trust people. That’s not going to change anytime soon.”

He screwed up his face at me. “Wha—”

“I’m just trying to be practical.”

“Well, you’re being ridiculous. None of this makes sense.”

“It does to me.”

Again, he said nothing.

In fact, he said nothing for so long that I finally looked him in the eye. The anger had left him, replaced by an emotion I didn’t recognize. Worst of all, he still smelled like summer. A little sweat and the open night air, everything I loved. Liked. I meant liked.

“What?” I said, finally.

He let loose a breath. “I’ll do it.”
