Slade, perfetto in moltissimi sensi e sicuramente senza nessuna difficoltà a trovare compagnia, è in realtà insicuro quanto Kate. La sua facciata professionale è l’armatura che nasconde l’uomo.

Slade Montgomery era la perfezione fatta persona. Ogni singolo muscolo era teso e ben definito. I capelli biondi che brillavano sulla sua carnagione scura le ricordavano i cereali al miele, e lei avrebbe dato qualsiasi cosa per un assaggio. Anche sudato e irritato, quest’uomo sapeva mantenere un centro interiore ben saldo, a riprova che sapeva benissimo chi era e non se ne scusava. Gli piaceva vincere. Gli piaceva ottenere quello che voleva.

Il loro combattere una contro l’altro, il negare il sentimento che si è risvegliato in loro, è un negare la loro natura. Tra ironia, battibecchi, sguardi di fuoco e scene erotiche molto calde (ma mai volgari) ci accorgiamo quanto sia davvero difficile amare, quanto le esperienze negative possano condizionarci e ritenerci non meritevoli dell’amore. Ma nemmeno provare è la colpa più grande.

Ben scritto, con personaggi vividi e unici, anche i personaggi secondari – anche e soprattutto il cane – è un libro che fa compagnia per alcune ore in pieno relax, tra sorrisi e arrabbiature, tra passione e ironia, con una storia che probabilmente non è originalissima, ma tenuta in piedi con maestria e garbo e con quel pizzico di magia che la rende piacevole e mai noiosa.

Wood chips and dust clung to his figure but it only added to his attractiveness, giving a sense of ruggedness to his normal poised elegance. Yes, women would definitely seek him out for his appearance alone, but she wondered how many stayed after they got a dose of his attitude. He must be on his best behavior to trick them.

“I don’t know why you’re interested in this,” he muttered.
