Il lavoro nel piccolo ospedale e la meravigliosa fattoria in cui si trova a vivere le danno la speranza di poter trascorrere una vita tranquilla, ma l’incontro, anzi lo scontro, con l’affascinantissimo sceriffo Cleary è una nota stonata che Gigi non sa spiegarsi…

– Dovevo stare ben alla larga da Jess Cleary. In vita mia non avevo mai provato un’attrazione così violenta per un uomo. Era così sexy che mi turbava. Il mio cervello non connetteva più e il mio corpo reclamava cose che non desideravo più da anni.-

Jess Cleary, lo sceriffo bello da togliere il fiato, teme che Georgia abbia approfittato del vecchio Ben, che lo abbia raggirato e convinto a lasciarle proprietà e denaro, e per questo la tratta malissimo nelle prime occasioni in cui la incontra. Presto si accorge di aver sbagliato e si lascia andare all’attrazione per Gigi, con costanza e testardaggine, fino a far cadere, uno a uno, le paure di Georgia, i suoi dubbi, i timori, le insicurezze.

Intanto a Prescott accadono cose strane, balordi e traffici illeciti sporcano il paesino e lo sceriffo indaga, cercando di venire a capo delle strane circostanze che si verificano e tentando di proteggere a tutti i costi le “sue ragazze”, Gigi e Roe.

Questa in sintesi la trama del romanzo, ma voglio dire qualcosa di più…

La storia mi è piaciuta moltissimo, è ben narrata e ben tradotta; i personaggi, tutti, sono ottimamente delineati: ogni moto dell’animo, ogni pensiero, timore o desiderio è comprensibile e verosimile; l’attrazione tra i due va oltre il desiderio sessuale, è intensa e profonda, motivata dalle loro stesse vite precedenti; le emozioni descritte, quelle giuste e quelle terribilmente sbagliate, calzano perfettamente ai protagonisti e ai comprimari.

Tutto pervaso da quella sensazione fortissima e avvolgente che non possiamo non riconoscere nel Diritto alla Felicità dichiarata per legge nella Grande America, quell’American Way of Life che mi fa amare moltissimo le storie così, e aspetterò con piacere di scoprire cosa accadrà nei prossimi volumi.

Una domanda: Prescott, Montana, 823 abitanti, un concentrato di testosterone e ragazzoni da perdere la testa… Che acqua bevono, da quelle parti?

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.

Cole Goodman was walking my way.

“I hear you’re saying yes to everything today?” I chased a bite of macaroni with some water.

She nodded, smiling again as she chewed.

“A guy could take advantage of that.”

Her chewing stopped and her blue eyes snapped to mine.

“That’s quite a list.” Cole nodded toward the journal in between bites.

“It is.” My smile faltered at the way his jaw hardened.

“Are you planning on doing these all by yourself?”

“Um, yes.” How else was I going to get through them all?

“That’s going to take a while.”

“I hope not,” I sighed. “My goal is to get them done before New Year’s.”

“What?” His spoon dropped into the jar, clinking against the glass. “That’s less than six months away.”

“I know.” Just thinking about all I still had to do made my shoulders fall. “I thought I could do it, but with the restaurant and some of the bigger things on the list, it will take longer. I was really hoping to have it done before Jamie’s birthday.”

That seemed impossible now. With the restaurant and all of the other things I was adding to my daily schedule, piling on more was going to wear me thin. If I didn’t let up, my self-imposed deadline would stress me to the max.

Which meant it would take just that much longer to put this list behind me. Could I do it if I added another year? Maybe two?

I didn’t have to do this all so soon. But I wanted to. I wanted to do this for Jamie and let it go. Every day, I was getting stronger. I was getting back on my feet. I was starting to live again—for me.

And until the list was done, I’d still be living for Jamie.

“Look.” Cole leaned his elbows on the table. “I don’t want to step on your toes. This is an awesome list and he had some cool ideas. If you want to do them on your own, I understand. I get that this is incredibly personal. But if you’d like, I’d be glad to help you with some of these.

“What?” I didn’t know what made me smile more. That he thought Jamie’s list was cool or that he wanted to help. Regardless, I was beaming. “You’d really help?”
