Reagan drops her head and lets out a shaky breath. “I do understand, Jude.” She pauses, and I’m hopeful for a moment that the conversation is over. But again, I’m wrong. Manny peers up at me with a wicked smile. “No. No. I’ll just go easy on you. I can’t have that pretty face all messed up for the cameras.” He jabs me playfully in the ribs.

I laugh at his statement. “I’ll try not to beat you too badly, old man.”

He straightens at the put-down and puffs out his muscles, trying to make himself look bigger and badder than usual. “Those are fighting words, Titan.”

“Bring it,” I tell him.

I don’t pay much attention to what I’m throwing into my suitcase as I pack. Some of the clothes are still in their dry cleaning bags. I’ll manage a few work outfits out of all this stuff.

I’m pretty pissed. After three weeks apart, Jude took off on me and won’t answer my calls or texts. I missed him like crazy, playing the role of doting politician’s wife while he campaigned.

He knows how much I was dreading that fucking interview and photo shoot for a magazine spread about our home life. Even with the cleaning and decorating help his staff hired, I had to make sure everything was just perfect myself. When a photographer is coming into your home, you have to make sure every last thing is on point.

But I gladly did all of it for him. He’s only home for two days before he hits the campaign trail again, and I’m livid that he fucked me and hardly said two words to me before storming out of here.

We agreed before we got married that nothing would ever come between us. Not politics, not my father—our marriage comes first.

But today his fucking ego came first, and I’m not waiting around until he decides to come home.

I’ve been sidelining my work for months now, focusing on helping Jude instead. And that’s been hard for me, because I’m passionate about my work. I’m the US Congress liaison for The Lancet Foundation, an organization founded two years ago to advocate for bipartisanship.

Jude and I have become the poster children for crossing party lines to find common ground. As Congressional opponents, we should have been enemies. For a while, we kind of were. But I quickly fell for him, seeing that what brought us together was more important than what we disagreed about.

I didn’t drop out of the race because of our relationship, but because the revelation about my father’s secret family made me reevaluate what was really important to me. But I’ve taken lots of hits from women’s groups within the Democratic Party for stepping aside for my man.

Invece Lauren all’improvviso è sparita senza lasciare traccia e questo ha fatto subito scattare il campanello d’allarme per chi la conosce bene. Lauren per il bene della compagnia aveva cercato di tenere sotto controllo degli atteggiamenti un po’ fuori luogo da parte di un suo ex, ma la situazione le è completamente sfuggita di mano e la sua vita è seriamente in pericolo. Antonio ha quasi zero informazioni su quello che le possa essere successo o chi l’abbia rapita, ma di fronte all’emergenza non si lascia prendere dal panico, anzi viene fuori il suo lato più duro. Prende il completo controllo della situazione, preoccupandosi soprattutto per la vita di Lauren, ma anche cercando di evitare che la vicenda possa avere ripercussioni sulle loro compagnie in un momento così delicato. Ho amato molto questa parte del libro così ricca di suspense e con un Antonio implacabile e senza scrupoli nel tentare di ritrovare Lauren. Forse è la parte del racconto che mi é piaciuta di più, insieme al momento in cui, dopo aver ritrovato Lauren, sempre lui cerca di far fare alla loro relazione un passo avanti, portandola in Italia a conoscere la sua famiglia. È una costante nei libri di questa autrice che almeno uno dei protagonisti abbia un legame molto forte con la propria famiglia, che sia molto legato alle proprie origini e i momenti in cui si riuniscono tutti insieme sono indimenticabili, divertenti e a volte ci si ritrova davanti a lotte tra fratelli e sorelle senza esclusioni di colpi. Ci sono anche a momenti molto toccanti, come quando Lauren, che non ha più una famiglia, sente il calore, l’affetto e l’amore con cui l’accolgono i familiari di Antonio intorno a sé, i quali tentano di farla sentire a casa perché comprendono quanto questa donna sia importante nella vita di Antonio. È anche il momento della verità per Lauren, scoprire cosa è più importante per lei: la sua carriera o un possibile futuro insieme a un uomo che è riuscito a sorprenderla. Antonio con Lauren ha abbassato completamente le difese, permettendole di vedere sfaccettature di sé che di solito rivela solo alle persone a cui tiene veramente. Sono due persone testarde, forti e passionali, mi è sempre piaciuto come Antonio veda le capacità di Lauren, la sua intelligenza e indipendenza come aspetti molto positivi, stimolanti, qualcosa che aggiunge un fascino particolare alla sua bellezza fisica e non come se fosse un “problema” il fatto si trovarsi di fronte a una donna al suo stesso livello di potere. Nella seconda parte il racconto è forse diventato un po’ più prevedibile e alcune cose ai miei occhi non sono sembrate “azzeccatissime” da parte dell’autrice, ma forse questo è solo dettato dal fatto che sono italiana e quindi ho potuto valutare aspetti specifici sull’ambientazione del romanzo in Italia ed essere più critica. Mi piacerebbe molto leggere di più sul gemello di Antonio, la pecora nera della famiglia. Come sempre in questi casi il rapporto tra lui e Antonio è un po’ di amore e odio, di rivalità e complicità, una perenne contraddizione, ma io ho un debole per i bad boy, quindi spero proprio di poter leggere un libro tutto su di lui.
